The presented vision proposes transforming the banks of the Nemunas River in Alytus into a vibrant axis connecting the city and nature. The project aims to restore the connection between the city’s public spaces and the river valley by creating a sustainable, accessible, and multifunctional infrastructure. This approach organically merges the blue and green zones with active navigation and a recreational landscape.

The proposed vision for the activation of the Nemunas River marks a new urban milestone for the city, aiming to maximize the potential of this navigable waterway. At the core of the concept is the development of a distinctive character for the riverbanks, applying unified design solutions and integrating historical and cultural elements. This approach not only reveals the unique local identity but also addresses existing navigation and infrastructure challenges, fostering a “blue and navigable” Alytus. By managing the river’s shallows and rapids, new opportunities emerge for active water recreation zones and green water transport.

The project is rooted in the principles of comprehensive accessibility and community building, driven by the idea that “Nemunas connects.” The newly designed pedestrian bridges and a seamless trail network envisioned in the proposal would ensure smooth connections between both riverbanks and the urbanized areas of the city. The revitalized Marina and the Old Pier serve as the primary compositional focal points. Active nature, leisure, and business zones are clustered around these hubs, establishing a vibrant core of daily activity that appeals to both Alytus residents and visiting tourists.

A strong emphasis is placed on the natural environment, striving to form a green and sustainable Nemunas valley. The local ecosystem is protected and enhanced through a hierarchically designed circular route system, encompassing approximately 30 km of pedestrian paths, 21 km of bicycle trails, and 40 km of water routes winding along the Nemunas. This network will replace the currently chaotic and fragmented paths, fully integrating them into the city’s overall landscape and public transport system. In the northern section, highlighted nature and history zones will ensure that urban activation harmonizes with environmental preservation, allowing visitors to experience the harmonious coexistence of city and nature.
