Juozapas Strumila (1774–1847), a pioneer of Lithuanian horticulture and author of the work “Northern Gardens” (Šiaurės sodai), established a scientific garden in Vilnius. The of garden is being commemorated through the creation of a new public space – the Juozapas Strumila public space.

The aim is to revitalize the designated space by commemorating the prominent botanist Juozapas Strumila (1774–1847), who established a large, scientifically managed botanical garden right here in 1811 (the street was once named after him). The concept seeks to transform the neglected territory into a vibrant public leisure space, becoming a green oasis in a densely urbanized zone. The project includes three main functional zones connected by an organic network of paths with long benches: the Juozapas Strumila fruit garden, a multifunctional meadow, and an educational play and leisure area.

The garden’s identity will be created based on J. Strumila’s legacy. In the northern part, fruit trees planted in a strict structure (every 6 meters) will interpret classicist compositions. The center will feature a “plant canopy” inspired by the botanist’s sketches and pots with plants he cultivated, forming an edible landscape. A multifunctional meadow will be located in the garden’s center, opening up a view of the valuable ruins. In the southern part, deeper in the park, a naturalistic playground will be installed. The plantings will be based on preserved mature trees and plant species cultivated in J. Strumila’s garden, such as roses, apple trees, pear trees, dogwoods, and currants.
