"Perkūno oželis" square

Bauland has won the landscape architecture competition to create a unique public space - a square in a densely populated Perkūnkiemis district of Vilnius

The vision for Snipe Square is to establish a green oasis within the densely urbanized Perkūnkiemis district, addressing the scarcity of green spaces. This square is designed to create and highlight a verdant landscape, providing local residents with a place to find respite in nature. It aims to become a destination for walks, recreation, and tranquility, harmoniously blending active zones with green areas.

A crucial aspect of the square's concept is the embodiment of the snipe's mythological significance. Naming the square "Snipe Square" intends to draw attention to the bird's connection with the pagan god Perkūnas and the origin of the district's name (Perkūnkiemis, meaning "Thunder's Village").

 Site Plan
  Landscape strategy plan
The square's design emphasizes the preservation of biodiversity and the restoration of natural habitats. A unique feature will be wetlands, reflecting the snipe's preferred environment and offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the importance of such ecosystems. Informational stands about wetland ecosystems and the cultivation of biodiversity are also planned. The square will function not only as a natural haven but also as a cultural and educational space where city dwellers can relax and gain knowledge about local nature and mythology.

The primary functions of Snipe Square include walking paths, recreational areas for community events, wetlands for both nature conservation and education, relaxation oases with benches and green islands, educational elements (informational stands about the snipe legend and the importance of biodiversity), and a multi-functional parking lot. Distinctive objects and features will include pavilions, artistic accents, an amphitheater, a decorative fountain, and children's playgrounds.
