The humanization of Trakai’s Karaimų Street is a solution that creates a pedestrian-friendly environment in the historic town.
The project implements a goal set in the 2015 Trakai City Sustainable Mobility Plan, and its necessity was confirmed by a 2022 resident survey in which more than half of the respondents supported the idea of turning part of the street into a pedestrian alley. The project’s objective is to use temporary measures to create a shared space that calms traffic. The project’s solutions were coordinated with representatives of the Trakai Historical National Park and presented to the local community. In response to residents’ wishes, the locations of the solutions were adjusted to achieve the best result.
The project’s solutions are divided into three main stages. First, a traffic reorganization is carried out, converting the transit street into a shared space that prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists. Second, five strategic rest zones are created, with designs that reflect the local identity and cultural heritage. Finally, a “green street” concept is implemented: former parking spaces are transformed into green islands with benches, trees, and flowers, thereby not only improving the street’s aesthetic appearance but also restoring its historical character.
